TREE PLANTING WITH SCHOOLS.
Ielanthi Primary School, located in Machakos County, has received recognition for its outstanding performance in the GIC program. Among the 900 schools chosen for the program, all are situated in the Seven Forks region of Machakos, Kitui, and Embu Counties—an area characterized by a semi-arid climate with unpredictable rainfall and elevated temperatures. Through the initiative, over 200,000 students from both primary and secondary schools in the region have received training in the effective cultivation of trees in dryland areas.
THE GREEN INITIATIVE CHALLENGE.
In collaboration with the KenGen Foundation, we administer the Green Initiative Challenge (GIC), a decade-long competition among schools aimed at establishing exemplary woodlots and tree planting within school premises. Annually, a hundred schools are chosen based on various criteria, including sufficient planting space. These selected schools undergo training and receive 320 seedlings for planting. After a two-year period, evaluations are conducted, and the top-performing schools are honored in a vibrant ceremony. Currently in Phase IX, this year marks the participation of 900 schools in the program.
