LANDSCAPE RESTORATION IN DRYLANDS.

Our landscape restoration programme in Kenyan drylands provides farmers with tree seedlings and provides training in soil & water conservation. The space between the trees lines is intercropped with adapted dryland crops and produces better yields thanks to increased water infiltration into the soil. On the other hand, the tree seedlings benefit from regular cleaning for the interplanted crops, and Nitrogen in case it’s pulses (green grams, cowpeas or pigeon peas) that are N-fixing plants.

HEALING OF THE LAND

Soil & Water conservation sometimes is complemented by establishment of check-dams against gully erosion. Much land in semi-arid areas is bare during the dry season and prone to soil erosion by the onset of the rains, before grass and weeds start growing. Sheet erosion (washing away of the upper and most fertile soil layer) is prevalent. Our farmer programme helps to conserve soils.

AGRO-FORESTRY IN NORTHERN UGANDA

The landscape is transformed through agroforestry, but silvopastoralism is also practiced, there grass for livestock fodder is grown between the trees, instead of agricultural crops. BGF’s farmers programme in Northern Uganda has evolved into a mass movement, where over 15,000 farmers are participating.

WATER

Working in a semi-arid environment, BGF has been donating water storage tanks for schools and farmer groups. These tanks were donated to Mboti Primary School in Mbuvu Location, Eastern Kitui County
